Speakers abstract - Varenicline in the smoking cessation service at Llandough Hospital and the University Hospital of Wales: results at 6 months

From mid-February to mid-May 2007 patients and staff attending for advice, help and support in stopping smoking were also offered varenicline or NRT as pharmacological aids, the choice being a joint decision between the smoker and the counsellor.

Of 142 attendees 100 (50 staff) chose varenicline and 42 (19 staff) NRT. At 6 months 29 (20%) of the 142 were successful quitters. Of those who had taken varenicline 26% were successes compared with 7% of the NRT group. Rates did not differ significantly between patients and staff. Unwanted effects sufficient to lead to discontinuation of varenicline were experienced by 16%.

The one-year success rate will be measured against the 20% usually achieved by our programme over the years.
