Since 2004 Ailsa Rutter has been the Director of Fresh-Smoke Free North East, an organisation currently funded by every Primary Care Organisation in the North East and the Department of Health to oversee the coordination and implementation of a comprehensive regional and local tobacco control programme. She is also the Regional Tobacco Policy Manager (RTPM) for the Department of Health. Ailsa also sits on the National Programme Board for Tobacco (England), a cross governmental board to oversee the delivery of all work towards the PSA targets on smoking. She is also an active member of the Smokefree Action Coalition.
Ailsa is jointly working on the North of England Tackling Illicit Tobacco for Better Health Programme with colleagues from the North West and Yorkshire and the Humber- the pan regional programme is addressing eight key areas to reduce supply and demand of illicit tobacco.
Prior to her work with Fresh and as RTPM, Ailsa managed the Gateshead and South Tyneside NHS Stop Smoking Service for three years. In the 1990's Ailsa lived and worked in Australia and worked on the National Tobacco Campaign and ran the Quit Campaign in Queensland.
